"Don't gobblefunk around with words," the giant in Roald Dahl's The BFG admonishes his friend. Words have meanings and should not be messed with! And yet, as evidenced by the giant's own fantastical vocabulary, gobblefunking is precisely why the English language is so wonderfully weird and expressive.
In a sense, editing is the art of knowing when and how to gobblefunk around with words in the pursuit of compelling stories, clarity, and style.
Before taking up my editing pencil full time I taught undergraduate writing and English literature. I recite a mean Middle English lyric if sufficiently bribed.
